Editorial: Help available for West Virginians with unexpected spike on electric bill

Last month’s brutal deep freeze took a toll on families across the region. Many experienced frozen water lines and leaks associated with the unprecedented cold spell. Now some also are reporting a significant spike in their monthly electric bills.

While this is certainly challenging for those families who are living on a fixed income, the simple fact of the matter is that we used more electricity in January to keep our homes warm. It is important to remember that electric bills are based on usage and unusually high bills are frequently a function of cold weather usage, according to the West Virginia Public Service Commission.

Those customers who received a higher than expected electric bill that they cannot afford to pay are urged to first contact their utility company. …
