Davis & Elkins College and DMC team to create lab

ELKINS, W.Va.  — An open house was held Monday for a simulation lab for Davis & Elkins College students on Davis Medical Center’s campus.

“We’re really interested in safety and quality care for all, and I think that’s exactly what this lab is all about,” D&E President Chris Wood said. “Our admissions material at Davis & Elkins College says ‘Find yourself here,’ and today, we’re awfully glad that we have found ourselves here with this partnership and we look forward to continuing to work together.”

The Center for Advanced Clinical Learning will provide nursing students from D&E, as well as nurses from DMC, the opportunity to learn and practice in a realistic, yet “risk-free” environment.

“We’re also grateful for the fact that, for the employees here at Davis Health System, this lab is available to them for continuing education, so this was really a win-win opportunity,” Wood said.

The simulation lab will help students become better prepared for real life situations by practicing how to respond to patients in a clinical situation in the simulated setting.

The lab consists of individual units including an emergency room, pediatrics and examination room. All units are furnished with the same medical supplies and equipment used in DMC’s clinical settings.

All medical equipment in the simulation will be real equipment, used by those in the medical field on a day-to-day basis, but the patients are not real and their conditions are fictitious. Interactive mannequins will be used to simulate people of different ages and genders. Some of the mannequins can be programmed to display their physiological status on monitors as well as normal and abnormal heart, lung and bowel sounds.

“Every time I walk through this facility and see those simulated mannequins — I always say, for our students, I want them to make all of their mistakes on the simulated mannequins because I might be their patient one day,”Wood joked.
