KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. — Before vocal organized opposition from citizens, the Ranson City Council voted to change the zoning of the Jefferson Orchards property near Kearneysville from a suburban residential zoning to light industrial uses.
More than two dozen citizens from around Jefferson County attended the meeting to speak against the rezoning at the public hearing immediately before the 4 to 2 vote to approve the rezoning.
Limited to 90-second comments by Mayor Keith “Duke” Pierson, most of the speakers yielded their time to Christine Wimer, president of the citizens development watchdog Jefferson County Foundation, to let her read from a lengthy prepared statement opposing the move.
