HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Locations throughout West Virginia will take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Oct. 26 to help residents safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs.
The bi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day was started by the DEA in 2010 to combat prescription drug abuse. Over the past 14 years, 9,285 tons of medication have been safely collected through this program.
“Safely disposing of old, unwanted and unneeded prescription drugs is an effective way to prevent accidental poisoning, overdosing, and abuse,” U.S. Attorney Will Thompson said in a press release.
Locations participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will collect unwanted or expired medication such as tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquid medications will also be accepted if they are in their original containers and tightly sealed. Syringes, sharps and illegal drugs will not be accepted.
Each site will also provide substance use resources and information.
