CHARLES TOWN — Storms arrived with a vengeance in the Eastern Panhandle Wednesday evening, bringing significant damage to the Charles Town area specifically.
Interim City Manager Alissa Meeks shared that based on assessments after the storms left the area, the bulk of the damage appeared to have started on the west end of the city near the former Thomassen Ford building, Evitts Run and along Augustine Avenue, where Charles Towers is located. Charles Towers is an apartment building that housed approximately 90 residents at the time of the storm.
Meeks added that storm damage also occurred eastward toward Jefferson Memorial Park, hitting segments of Morrison Street, South Samuel Street and beyond.
The storm came as the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning around 6:25 p.m. The storm brought straight line winds in addition to the nearly 2.25 inches of rain that fell in the area.
