Barbour County mine “temporarily idled” during death investigation into first West Virginia miner fatality of 2018

PHILIPPI, W.Va.  — Sentinel Mine in Barbour County, the site of Tuesday morning’s death of a Randolph County man, has been temporarily idled during an investigation into the fatality, Arch Coal spokeswoman Logan Bonacorsi said.

“On behalf of Sentinel Mine, we are saddened to confirm that Leonard Griffith of Valley Bend suffered fatal injuries this morning, Feb. 6,” Bonacorsi said. “Mr. Griffith, 52, has been an employee of Sentinel mine for more than three years.”

The state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training confirmed that Griffith’s death was the first mining fatality in West Virginia this year.
