DUNBAR, W.Va. — A veteran himself, Darrell Cunningham had one brief message for attendees before they began laying wreaths on hundreds of veterans’ graves at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery on Saturday.

“I see a lot of you have cameras, camera phones. As you’re out here today, take a picture of the names on these headstones,” said Cunningham, the cemetery’s director. “When you get home, do some research on these people … Understand that they aren’t just veterans — they were doctors, lawyers, carpenters, parents. [Veterans] are all types of people from all walks of life. Remember those details about them, too.”

About 300 people were spread throughout the cemetery on Saturday afternoon, laying almost 1,000 wreaths on the graves of veterans as part of the national Wreaths Across America event.
