MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The unprecedented trials of the entire West Virginia Supreme Court are drawing mixed reactions among some of the state’s business and educational leaders regarding the impact this could have on the state.
Controversy that began in 2017 around the Supreme Court spending more than $3 million on renovations to the justices’ offices later expanded to accusations of corruption, incompetence and neglect of duty. Justice Menis Ketchum quit on the eve of his impeachment and later pleaded guilty to a felony count of fraud related to his personal use of a state vehicle and gas fuel card. Former Justice Robin Davis resigned after her impeachment, but still faces trial by the Senate, along with the now suspended Allen Loughry, Margaret Workman and Beth Walker. However, Davis recently asked a federal court to stop her trial from continuing.
The impeachment trials are set to begin today, starting with Justice Beth Walker. Some have said the situation will affect business confidence.
