BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The Mercer County Airport invites all to learn more about aviation and the community’s history of flight over Memorial Day weekend as officials offer an experience to get up close and personal with aircraft and witness a live air show.
Events will continue through today as the Rise Above Tuskegee Airmen Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., free to the public, giving the option of a 15 or 30 minute movie showing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen.
“Each time we have an air show we have something a little bit different to change it up each time,” Airport Manager Clint Ransom said. “For people that don’t know what the Tuskegee Airmen are, it’s a good chance to come out, learn a little about the history. There’s a lot of historical significance with the local connection to Bluefield State with three of the Tuskegee Airmen being Bluefield State graduates. And the Tuskegee Airmen are a very historical black, all black, fighter squadron in World War II.”
