Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta events kick off Thursday

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va.  — The annual Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta kicks off this Thursday with pageants and a performance by Jake Dunn and the Blackbirds.

The band performs a free concert at 8:30 p.m., Thursday at the Riverfront Park stage.

Jake Dunn & The Blackbirds are described as an Americana-rock group from southeastern Ohio. The band consists of Jake Dunn (vocals/guitar), Dustin Nash (guitar), Chuck McPeek (guitar), Jesse Forrest (drums/vocals), and Bobby Wheeler (bass/vocals).

TOriginally from Pomeroy, Ohio, lead singer and primary song writer, Dunn, now resides in Marietta, Ohio with the rest of the band living in the surrounding Mid-Ohio Valley and Columbus. The group is heavily influenced by 70’s rock and roll as well as country music artists such as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Their sound, while not quite rock and roll or country, sits somewhere in between Americana and Roots Rock, focusing heavily on lyrics and musicianship. Their more contemporary influences include Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, Sturgle Simpson, and The Drive-by Truckers.

Jake Dunn & The Blackbirds have shared the stage with artists such as Unknown Hinson, David Childers, Angela Perley and the Howling Moons, Ona, Chris Keesey, Ben Davis Jr., Oldnews, Erica Blinn, Andrea Davidson, and The Horse Traders to name a few. They have played many venues across Ohio and West Virginia, such as: Court St. Grill (Pomeroy), Casa Nueva (Athens, Ohio), Tree Bar (Columbus) and The Adelphia Music Hall (Marietta).

Their first release EP “The Darkness Creeping In” is currently available on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon.

Jake Dunn and the Blackbirds will follow the regatta teen and queen pageants which begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, at Riverfront Park, while the River Princess and Miss Maritime, Little Miss and Mister Showboat and Pretty Baby Contest all happen at 5 p.m., Friday, June 30, also at Riverfront Park.

Though the contestants have already signed up and registered for the teen and queen pageants, there is still time to sign up for the junior royalty pageants on Friday. Sign up time is from 3-4 p.m. at the Riverfront Park entrance on Friday. Age divisions are as follows: River Princess (10-12); Miss Maritime (6-9); Little Miss Showboat (5); and Little Mister Showboat (5). All contestants must be residents of Mason County. Contestants ages 6-12 will compete in Party Wear and On-Stage Interview. Contestants for the Showboat titles will compete in Nautical Wear and On-Stage Interview. Entry fee to compete is $25 for River Princess and Miss Maritime; $15 for Little Miss/Mister Showboat.

The Pretty Baby Contest will also be held the same evening, Friday, June 30, on the Riverfront Park stage. Registration is $15 and sign ups are from 3-4 p.m., Friday. Residents must be from Mason County. Age groups are as follows: 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months, 19-24 months, 3 years old, and 4 years old. Babies need to be dressed in Nautical Wear – red, white, blue; stripes; stars; anchors; etc. Bathing suits are also permitted.
