Charleston – The West Virginia Coal Association today applauded the announcement by Frontieras North America to construct a flagship $850 million advanced coal reformation facility in Mason County—a project that underscores West Virginia’s position as a national leader in next-generation coal technology and energy innovation.

The Mason County facility will utilize advanced reformation processes to convert coal into cleaner, high-value carbon and energy products, supporting both domestic manufacturing and energy independence. The project represents a major investment in Appalachia’s workforce and economy, promising to create hundreds of construction and long-term operating jobs and generate millions in local and state tax revenue.

“Frontieras’ decision to site this innovative facility in the heart of West Virginia’s coalfields demonstrates real confidence in our people, our resources, and our leadership,” said Chris Hamilton, President of the West Virginia Coal Association. “This project reflects what we’ve said for years—West Virginia coal isn’t going away. It’s evolving, driving new technology, new markets, and new economic growth.”

Hamilton also commended Governor Patrick Morrisey for his leadership and efforts to bring Frontieras North America to West Virginia. “Governor Morrisey’s commitment to building a stronger, more diversified energy economy is paying real dividends for our state,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton added that the investment reinforces the state’s growing reputation for energy innovation and public-private collaboration. “Governor Morrisey, the West Virginia Department of Economic Development, and local officials continue to make our state an attractive place to invest and build,” he said. “This kind of partnership delivers exactly what West Virginia needs—family-sustaining jobs and long-term industrial growth centered around our state’s abundant natural resources.”

Frontieras North America’s advanced coal reformation technology enables low-emission processing and high recovery of valuable carbon molecules for use in steelmaking, battery materials, and fuels, placing West Virginia on the cutting edge of modern coal utilization.

“The coal industry has always been the foundation of West Virginia’s economy,” Hamilton said. “Projects like this ensure it will continue to be a foundation of our future.”
