Editorial cartoon exhibit to be on display at The Register-Herald

BECKLEY — A unique collection of editorial cartoons spanning decades of West Virginia politics will be on display beginning Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the lobby of Beckley Newspapers at 801 North Kanawha Street.

“Drawing Conclusions” was compiled from more than 1,100 published cartoons by Athens resident Tom Bone.

A reception open to the public is scheduled for Sept. 17 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the lobby. The exhibit will conclude on October 24.

“Over the years, I have had the privilege of commenting on decades of West Virginia politics and everyday life,” Bone said. “Among my first memories of elected officials was Governor Hulett C. Smith, who was from Beckley.”

“Good editorial cartoons allow you to make a point in a quick and memorable way, usually with the use of humor,” he said. “I have always appreciated these opportunities as a way to help readers think about things that could impact their lives.”

Bone grew up in Monroe County and his family ties stretch into Raleigh, Mercer and Wyoming counties. He holds degrees from Concord and Marshall universities.
