WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — Not many West Virginia high school students are beginning the 2025-26 school year knowing ahead of time that theirs is currently ranked the ninth best among all of the state’s 114 high schools.
It’s not a usual year for Tug Valley High School students, particularly after they learned that TVHS had again received both of these designations by U.S. News and World Report.
“To be recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a top 10 high school in our state and ranked as high as we are throughout the country, is simply a really great honor,” TVHS Principal Dr. Doug Ward said. “To be ranked number nine, and the highest among small schools, I think, is a testament to the level of success we strive for at this school.”
This marks the second time TVHS has received a ranking in the publication, having been rated 23rd in the state two years ago.
Ward said this current ranking is based on 2024 data as well as a number of related factors, including the number of students who took at least one AP exam, the number of students who passed at least one AP exam, and the number of students who were proficient in math, reading and science.
