PRINCETON – Hundreds of butterflies symbolizing hope, change and renewal flew free Thursday as a local hospital celebrated the coming creation of a new center bringing more cancer treatment services to southern West Virginia and beyond.

WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital hosted a kickoff ceremony as demolition and construction starts to for a 45,500 square foot, two-story and over $35 million comprehensive cancer center. This event was held in what was once the hospital’s laundry facility. This building will be demolished to make way for the new facility adjoining the hospital.

“Absolutely,” said Karen Bowling, WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital President and CEO. “We’re calling it a celebration and we believe it’s so important for us to begin to talk about this transformative type of event that’s occurring today because where we’re standing today will be our new cancer center. The work begins now to create the cancer center, a state-of-the-art facility to meet the needs of the people in our community and it’s a really exciting day for us.”

The center’s projected completion date is late 2027, Bowling said.
