Sugar maple replaces storm-damaged oak on Capitol grounds

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A new sugar maple tree has taken root on the West Virginia State Capitol grounds, thanks to a donation from the West Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association (WVNLA).

The 13-foot tree arrived just after noon on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and was planted that afternoon by the Capitol grounds crew. It replaces a large oak tree that fell earlier this spring after sustaining storm damage — a collapse that crushed a nearby parked vehicle.

Julie Robinson, executive director of WVNLA, was on site with several members of the association’s board of directors to oversee the planting. She said the organization offered to donate and install the new tree as a service to the state and as a continuation of a tradition.
