New superintendent: Uncertainty surrounds possible cuts in school funding

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — In the less than two weeks she’s been on the job, newly state-appointed Mingo County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joetta Basile has been busy dividing her time between getting to know her department directors and conducting meetings — taking what she refers to as her “listen and learn tour.”

She has also begun focusing on and at some point ideally correcting those specific problem areas that resulted in the state taking control of the school district in March.

One potential problem that will require successful navigation should it become necessary, she said, has nothing to do with Mingo County’s recent troubles resulting in the state’s seizing control of the district, but rather, one that is currently facing every school district in the country.

This potential problem, specifically, has to do with the possible loss of federal funding due to President Donald Trump’s recent decision not to release nearly $7 billion in K-12 education funds that normally would have been distributed to school districts at the beginning of July.
