POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The Battle Days celebration will return to Point Pleasant in October, but this year’s event will be much grander. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Point Pleasant, which Battle Days commemorates.

Among the attractions will be an art show commemorating the battle. Organizers have now offered greater detail on the expectations of art submitted for the show.

In October 1774, Native American tribes, led by Shawnee Chief Cornstalk, fought the Virginia militia, led by Col. Andrew Lewis. The battle took place along the Ohio River at what is now Point Pleasant. After a long and violent clash, Cornstalk finally retreated.

Following the battle, the Virginians, and an additional force led by Lord Dunmore, the royal governor of Virginia, traveled to the Ohio Valley and convinced Cornstalk to agree to a treaty.

Art submitted for the show should be historically themed, relating to the Battle of Point Pleasant, Native American history, or the frontier era. For inspiration, students may use the Point Pleasant floodwall murals, the work of local artist Jan Haddox, local histories from the Mason County Library or the mansion house.
