HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Appalachian communities that have historically relied on the coal economy for economic stability will receive some help, officials said Wednesday in Huntington.
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration announced a $38.8 million investment aimed at growing the economy in the nation’s coal-impacted communities during an event Wednesday morning in Huntington’s Central City district, on 14th Street West. The ARC says about 23,000 Appalachian coal jobs were lost between 2011 and 2015.
