WVPA Sharing: Our Children, Our Future Coalition presents platform

Stephen Smith, organizer of the Our Children, Our Future Campaign to End Child Poverty, presents the campaign’s 11-point 2014 legislative platform to Hallie Mason, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s director of public policy, during a Jan. 7 campaign press conference at the Capitol in Charleston. During the event at the Capitol, Smith reviewed the agenda with participants in campaign. Following the event, participants distributed the campaign’s 11-point platform to lawmakers’ offices. The platform includes increasing the state minimum wage and ensuring students in kindergarten through eighth grade get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day during school. Among legislators accepting the information, State Sen. Ron Stollings, D-Boone, told participants, “I love your platform.”  Stollings is chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Resources Committee.
