Big shoes to fill

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — As a youngster growing up in the little hamlet of Nolan, W.Va., I recall how exciting it was to get our daily newspaper.

I would always run out to the box to pick it up and of course go to the sports page. I wanted to see what the Cincinnati Reds had done the night before or read about the Williamson Wolfpack and other local high school sports teams, especially during basketball season.

My mother and father loved reading the paper. We always had the paper and other publications in our home like Life, Look and The Saturday Evening Post. I guess that is how I grew to love the print media.

Fast forward a few years and after a stint of working at WBTH radio, I got hired as sports reporter by the late Wally Warden. That was my first job in newspaper.

Though I went back into radio for a while, I ended up back at the paper working for Wally, one of the best editors the state of West Virginia has ever seen.

After a couple of jobs in public relations and as a substitute teacher, I longed to return to the newspaper business. Throughout those years I had continued to free- lance, some with the WDN and with the Charleston Gazette and Daily Mail. I worked for a year in Pikeville, Ky.

But I was always drawn back to my local paper…
