West Virginia unemployment falls to 4.8% in August

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.8% in August, the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state since June 2019, according to WorkForce West Virginia.

The number of unemployed state residents decreased by 1,700 to 38,200 in August. Total employment grew 1,500 over the month.

The national unemployment rate declined two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.2% in August.

Gov. Jim Justice praised the state’s improved unemployment figures during his Wednesday press briefing.

“This is a 16th straight month that the unemployment rate has gone down,” he said. “No one is more proud of that than myself. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people, but really and truly we’ve got to be really proud right here and all throughout our state that we’ve pushed the right the buttons and gotten an additional 1,500 people that are back into the workforce.” …
