CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Total assessed value of property owned by public utilities in West Virginia totaled $11.189 billion in 2018, up $432.6 million from the previous year, according to an assessment approved by the Board of Public Works Thursday.
Jeff Amburgey, director of the state Property Tax Division, said construction of natural gas pipelines in many parts of the state is driving most of the increase.
Under state law, the state Tax Division each fall assesses the total value of property owned by utilities operating in the state, which under the law includes traditional electric, natural gas, and water and sewer companies, along with railroads, airlines and bus companies, and telephone and cellphone service providers.
