BEAVER, W.Va. — The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) has granted candidacy for accreditation to New River Community and Technical College for the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Associate of Applied Science program. The first class will begin the program of study in August.
“We are excited to be able to add physical therapist assistant to our offerings,” said New River CTC President Dr. Bonny Copenhaver. “The process to get us to this point has been a rigorous one, and our program director, faculty and staff have worked diligently to develop this program working with our advisory board.”
New River CTC began developing the program in 2018 to meet the need for physical therapist assistants in southern West Virginia.
The PTA program at New River CTC consists of five semesters of study including general education courses followed by technical and clinical courses. Applications are currently being accepted for the August 2022 cohort.

New River Community and Technical College serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from the Greenbrier Valley Campus (Lewisburg), Mercer County Campus (Princeton), Nicholas County Campus (Summersville) and Raleigh County Campus (Beaver).
Graduation from a physical therapist assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, Virginia 22305-3085; phone; 703-706-3245; [email protected] is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.
Effective July 13, 2021, New River Community and Technical College has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, Virginia 22305-3085; phone: 703-706-3245; email: [email protected]).
