Setback on recycling shouldn’t be final answer

HUNTINGTON — It seems an effort to keep a recycling program alive in Cabell County has suffered a case of bad timing. But considering the progress that’s been made in the past five years to afford county residents an option to recycle materials, that’s not sufficient reason to let the program lapse without pursuing other strategies.

The Cabell County Solid Waste Authority’s drop-off recycling program was curtailed this summer as expenses grew and will end altogether at the end of the year because funds will run out. The authority, to its credit, devised a solid plan to bring it back next year, so long as county voters approved a tax levy that would cost most property owners less than $10 a year. It involved establishing a program not dependent on an outside contractor, which contributed to the current program’s demise.

However, getting that tax levy on the November ballot required action by the Cabell County Commission, which last week chose not to authorize the vote. The unfortunate timing had to do with the county commission’s own financial problems…
