Senate should follow Constitution, consider nominee

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — It has been a very unsettling year for national Republican Party leaders. The frontrunner for the GOP nomination for president is someone whom many in the party hierarchy detest. There could be a brokered convention. There could be “riots” by Trump supporters, or at least that’s what he thinks.

Add to this the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Senate Republican leaders remain steadfast that they will not consider a nominee until a new president is in place. They want the American people to have a say.

And then President Obama nominated U.S. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the high court. Senate leaders say they won’t hold hearings and won’t put the nomination up for a vote.

What a mess…
