Relapses show difficulty of addiction recovery

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Even when you kick the habit, addiction is never far away.

A sad story this week underscores the difficult road of recovery faced by many caught in our region’s epidemic of opioid drug use.

State police found a man and women in an Altizer apartment Monday suffering from apparent heroin overdoses while their young children looked on. The two were charged with felony child neglect, as well as misdemeanor drug possession, and the children were taken into the state’s custody by Child Protective Services.

 Tragically, it had all happen before. The mother had lost custody of the children, gone through substance abuse treatment and regained custody earlier this year…
