HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The few recycling options Cabell County residents now have will become even more limited within the next couple of weeks, raising the question about what can and should be done to reverse that trend.
The amount of materials deposited at several drop-off recycling bins – about 100 tons a month – demonstrates that local residents are willing to be environmentally conscious, so taking a step backward would be unfortunate. But money considerations are at play and can’t be ignored going forward.
The county’s recycling program – spearheaded by the Cabell County Solid Waste Authority – began in 2011 and grew to have 37 bins at eight locations where residents could drop off recyclables for free. But last year, the contractor hired to pick up and process those materials doubles its charge…
