Nature’s Air-Conditioned City staying cool

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Nature’s Air-Conditioned City is once again living up to its billing. While much of the nation has been forced to endure a sweltering heat wave, here in the mountains we still haven’t hit 90 degrees. At least not according to the official National Weather Service thermometer stationed at the Mercer County Airport.

In fact, it’s been three long years since free lemonade has been served in the two Bluefields. And going for long stretches of time without free lemonade helps to build up a thirst for the city’s timeworn promotion, a point correctly noted earlier this week by Marc Meachum, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce.

During the extreme heat of the past couple of days, people atttending the Blue Jay games at Bowen Field would come up to Meachum and ask if lemonade would be served the following day. His answer was “no…
