Lawmakers must ask themselves tough questions

BECKLEY, W.Va. — FACT: No one has said, ever, “Yes, I would like to pay more taxes, please!”

FACT: If West Virginia legislators don’t get off of their duffs and give full consideration to raising something, this state and their constituents are going to find themselves in worse trouble than we’re already in.

As legislators prowl the Capitol in Charleston, now at the end of their third day of the budget special session, it still seems that few of them — especially in the House of Delegates — are ready to face reality.

On that list are more than 25 who signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, sponsored by Washington lobbyist Grover Norquist. The pledge is against the implementation of any new taxes…
