HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — When you ask children what they want to be when they grow up, “policeman” is still a popular answer. And if you were to judge employment by the characters portrayed on television dramas, half of Americans would be police detectives.
But in the real world, matching up outstanding candidates with opportunities in law enforcement is a bigger challenge than it might seem.
Police forces in big cities and small towns report that in recent years, applications are down. Yet, as many of the controversies about law enforcement over the past few years underscore, the quality of personnel involved has never been more important.
