Freedom of speech cornerstone of all other freedoms

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Many is the time a reader will take issue with something he or she reads on this page, be it an editorial by our editorial board or one of the syndicated columns. Sometimes he or she even complains about the editorial cartoon.

That is why we welcome letters to the editor (actually it’s more like emails to the editor these days) so that we can have feedback, criticism and others points of view.

 This exchange of ideas goes to the heart of one of our cherished freedoms in the United States: Freedom of speech.

This is National Free Speech Week, a time in which we ponder our right to say what we feel and to say it without fear of being jailed or sanctioned in some way. Unfortunately, that happens in many countries around the globe.

National Free Speech Week was started more than a decade ago by a non-profit group called the Media Institute. Partners in the weeklong celebration in free speech include the Newspaper Association of America, the American Society of News Editors, the National Association of Broadcasters and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, among others.
