WVU students carry signs Thursday, at the Mountainlair, to protest shootings involving police.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In response to the shootings of unarmed black men Michael Brown and Tamir Rice and the choking of Eric Garner, WVU students protested near the Mountainlair steps Thursday, Dec.11.
Students, most with the university’s Center for Black Culture and Research, endured the cold for the cause, holding signs that read “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” and “My Life is Just As Important As Hers,” which pointed to a white woman next to the black sign-holder.
Marjorie Fuller, Center director, said the shootings in Ferguson, Mo., and Cleveland and the choking in Staten Island, N.Y., were unjust and pose an issue for everyone.
Fuller’s goal — the main reason she was protesting during a cold and windy day — was to allow students to have a voice and call for peaceful change.
