WV ski resorts have new equipment, features

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Within the next couple weeks, Snowshoe Mountain and Winterplace are slated to open for the new skiing season after investments in improving winter sport activities for visitors.

Winterplace in Ghent should open shortly after Thanksgiving, said Tom Wagner, executive vice president of the resort.

 The resort invested in new snow-making equipment which will allow it to expand the skiing season, he said.

It has also invested in new top-of-the-line ski rental equipment, Wagner said.

But the most exciting improvement, he said, was the expansion of the snow tubing park, which can have up to 20 lanes opened at one time. This is the largest snow tubing park in the state.

Snowshoe, in Pocahontas County, invested $800,000 in new snow-making equipment, said Dave Dekema, vice president of marketing.

The resort has improved its glade skiing area, six additional acres of wooded trails, he said.

If a visitor is looking for something besides skiing, Snowshoe created Evolution Park for this season. The new terrain park allows more free-style features, such as jumps, boxes and rails…
