WV lawmaker to stay on to protect Senate majority

BECKLEY, W.Va. — State Senator Daniel Hall, R-Wyoming, who Tuesday announced his pending resignation from the legislature’s upper chamber, hedged on that plan Wednesday morning, saying if Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin plans to appoint a Democrat to fill his seat, he’ll stay on in the Senate.

Tomblin Communications Director Chris Stadelman said the governor will wait on a vacancy before making any decision.

 “Until there is a vacancy, the governor has no role in any decision with regard to the appointment process,” Stadelman said.

Hall, who said Wednesday that he’ll stay in the Senate until the issue is resolved or until Tomblin makes a statement that he’ll appoint a Republican, believes he knows what the governor would do.

“They’ll put a Democrat in there and that would be horrible,” Hall said, adding that he would not put the Senate “in chaos” without knowing for certain which party would fill his position.

A Democrat appointee would mean the Senate would be evenly divided, 17-17…
