WV hunters flock to the woods with big hopes

Three generations of the Hosaflook family were out bright and early Monday for the first day of buck season.

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Hundreds of thousands of hunters are flocking to West Virginia’s woods and fields this week in hopes of finding that trophy buck.

Firearms buck season began Monday and continues through next Saturday. As of 4 p.m. Monday, the Division of Natural Resources reported 10,086 bucks had been checked in through the automated real-time system.

Russ Colley of Clarksburg bagged an eight-point buck after just a few minutes in the woods of Doddridge County Monday morning.

“I’ve been a lifetime hunter since the age of 16,” Colley said. “My son will go with me Tuesday. I have three boys. My middle son, who is 22, has been hunting since he was young.”

Capt. Bill Persinger of the Division of Natural Resources Law Enforcement, said his office has been very busy fielding calls regarding new hunting regulations that are in effect from last July 1 to next June.
