WV House panel OKs bill to dissolve Parkways, tolls

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Alluding to his relationship with Senate President Bill Cole, Delegate Marty Gearheart said Monday night that a bill he sponsors in the House will likely trump the bill to be discussed today in the Senate Committee on Transportation.

Cole and Gearheart, both Mercer County Republicans, travel the West Virginia Turnpike to Charleston, thus paying the $2 toll at three points along the way — and back. E-Z Pass customers pass the booths at $1.30 each.

Gearheart’s bill lays out a plan for the dissolution of the West Virginia Parkways Authority, including those tolls, once the bonds for the road are paid off in 2019. All the WVPA assets and debts will transfer to the Division of Highways then. The delegate said neither the Parkways Authority nor the DOH had a plan for the transition.
