West Virginians dig out after Winter Storm Jonas

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Sunday was the dig out day.

Across Raleigh County, people threw on their coat and gloves, grabbed a shovel and started to dig.

 And a few also grabbed their sled.

In Stanaford, Chad Minor had shovel in hand, but he wasn’t digging out a driveway or parking spot.

Instead, Minor was 15 feet above ground pushing snow off his grandmother’s roof. Around 11 a.m. Sunday, Minor started clearing the roof of the small one-story house on Stanaford Road. An hour later, he had the front porch and slope cleared.

“It’s slow moving,” he said of shoveling a roof.

Although Winter Storm Jonas dumped 20 inches of snow on the Beckley area, the light flakes made clearing the roof easier, said Minor.

“I tell you there is a lot of snow up here; it fits right on the shovel,” he said. “It must be near 2 feet, but luckily there is no ice under it. If there was heavy snow, you would see a lot more” caved-in roofs…
