CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Fewer West Virginians are going to college.

Total enrollment for all of the state’s public four-year colleges and universities decreased by 1.6 percent from 2013 to 2014, and has steadily declined for the past four years, according to new data from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

Total state enrollment has dropped by more than 3,000 students since 2010, with about 65,400 students currently enrolled in state colleges. Those numbers do not include students enrolled at private or technical schools.

Bluefield State College saw the greatest drop this year, with student enrollment falling nearly 11 percent since the fall of 2013, according to the policy commission.

Concord University, in Athens, saw the second-largest drop, decreasing by 8 percent since last year and bringing enrollment to about 2,500 students. Both schools are in Mercer County.

Potomac State College and Fairmont State University also saw significant decreases in enrollment.
