W.Va. celebrities ‘square’ off in game show classic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Which West Virginia country music singer was the first to wear a “Nudie suit” at the Grand Ole Opry?

“Little Jimmy Dickens,” answered Charlie McCoy, the famous harmonica player and Fayette County native.

That question wasn’t a hard one for McCoy, who out of all the stars on stage, would most likely know that Dickens was famous for appearing in rhinestone studded suits. McCoy didn’t even try to bluff.

The “West Virginia Squares,” based on the popular television show, “Hollywood Squares,” brought some of the state’s most famous names to the Clay Center on Monday night.

Peter Marshall, the original host of “Hollywood Squares,” and a West Virginia native, fired questions at the stars about West Virginia music and history while two Raleigh County teenagers tried to decide whether to believe their answers.

The more than 200 people in the audience often roared with laughter at Marshall’s humor, and seemed to especially enjoy the clips he showed from the old show…
