WAYNE, W.Va. — After years of commuting from Lavalette to Charleston, Rick Thompson has decided to come home for good. Thompson, the West Virginia Secretary of Veterans Assistance, announced Thursday he would be stepping down, effective Friday, Jan. 8, to run for Wayne County Sheriff.

“I want to come home, and that’s the job I want,” Thompson said. “I want to come home and make it safer for my grandchildren and make it safer for other people’s grandchildren.”

Thompson, 63, has spent the past two and a half years as the West Virginia Secretary of Veterans Assistance, and previously served as the Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 2007 to 2013. Thompson had also been elected out of Wayne County to the House of Delegates for 14 years.
