Ten new hires to staff WV Capitol security entrances

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Protective Services is hiring 10 staffers to man the two new security entrances to the state Capitol.

Initially, Protective Services will hire five new Capitol Police officers — at starting salaries of $30,000 each — and five part-time screeners at $15 an hour, Department of Public Safety and Military Affairs spokesman Lawrence Messina said Tuesday. That was under the initial proposal to have the West Wing public entrance open year-round and the East Wing entrance open only during legislative sessions.

With revised plans to keep both the West and East wing entrances open year-round, Messina said the part-time staffers will eventually be replaced with, or be promoted to, full-time officers.

He said the state will not use outside vendors to provide security guards to staff the security checkpoints…
