Spirits high despite rain at Greenbrier tennis event

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Steady rain throughout the day Saturday forced all of the action of The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic to be moved to Sunday, and the relentless wet weather caused problems again Sunday, moving the action away from the new Center Court at Creekside stadium and inside The Greenbrier Indoor Tennis Center.

The last-minute change wasn’t what officials had hoped for the event, which was supposed to be another chance to showcase the state-of-the-art facility, which also experienced rain during its grand opening in June.

 “I can’t believe it,” said Greenbrier owner Jim Justice, joking that he was blaming Sandy Cutler, the CEO of Eaton corporation and the visionary behind The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic and Center Court at Creekside, for bringing the rain to every event. “September’s our driest month of the year. I’m in the corn business, so I need Sandy to come around when I need rain on the corn field. But I really appreciate everybody being understanding.”

Although the setting wasn’t perfect, the action on the court didn’t disappoint.
