Small Wyoming County town gets military Humvees

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Through a federal program, Oceana Police Department received two military Humvees and two trailers, according to Chief Jeff Barlow.

The “new” equipment came from the federal 1033 program that distributes surplus military equipment to cash-poor police departments.

 The Humvees — or high mobility, multi-purpose, wheeled vehicles — will be used during inclement weather situations, such as flooding or snow storms, for rescues or other emergencies, Barlow said.

The 2005 and 2009 vehicles can also be used to assist law enforcement in the summer marijuana eradication program, he noted.

The five-man department began the application process in October, Barlow said, and the Humvees arrived this week.

Additionally, the department is on a waiting list for two ATV side-by-side vehicles…
