Small WV town proud of historic bridge redo

MANNINGTON, W.Va. — A six-year bridge replacement project came to an end Monday.

The Clarksburg Street Bridge, which was under construction for about 10 months, was named the Historic Southside Bridge. It was dedicated in the honor of Samuel Nelson “Doc” Elliott and Florence Anastasia Ryan in Mannington.

 Mannington Mayor Jim Taylor said Monday was a great day for the City of Mannington.

He said the new bridge is much safer than the old bridge and is also historically correct.

“We desperately needed the new bridge due safety concerns,” Taylor said. “When you see something that starts in 2009 and finally finishes in 2015 and the finished product is historically correct, it’s just a great day for us. It opens up transportation, takes some traffic off of High Street and schools will be serviced better by the school buses.

“It does a lot of great things for the City of Mannington.”

Taylor said more than 60 people were involved with the construction of the bridge, and many residents stepped up…
