CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Coal City woman will compete on this season of NBC’s “The Voice,” a show that pits singers against one another for the chance to win a record contract.
Krista Hughes successfully made it through the blind audition portion of the show, during which celebrity coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams listen with their backs to the singer and turn their chairs around as they approve of the contestant’s singing.
During Hughes’ audition, all four judges’ chairs turned.
Backstage before the audition, Hughes said she kept thinking about how she only needed one chair to turn around to make it through the first round.
“I was praying I wouldn’t forget my words,” she said.
Her nerves went away when the music started and she sang the classic John Prine song “Angel From Montgomery.” As the judges’ chairs started to turn, her adrenaline started to flow and she said she sort of blacked out. She doesn’t remember much from the audition, she said.
“Watching the audition (on TV) was like I was watching it the first time,” Hughes said.
Hughes picked Shelton to be her coach. Her team also got some help from fellow West Virginia native and country artist Brad Paisley…
