Ohio County board to reconsider superintendent’s ouster

WHEELING, W.Va. — Ohio County Board of Education members will discuss Monday whether to reverse their decision not to renew Superintendent Dianna Vargo’s contract.

The board is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the board office at 2203 National Road in Elm Grove.

On the agenda for the meeting is the “reconsideration of the actions of the actions of the December 29, 2015 Board of Education meeting,” during which members voted 3-2 not to retain Vargo after her contract expires June 30.

Voting “yes” to not renew Vargo’s contract were board president Shane Mallett, Gary Kestner and Tim Birch. Christine Carder and Sarah Koegler voted “no” in support of retaining Vargo.

Carder requested the matter be put on the agenda for Monday night after many attending a town hall meeting last week with board members told them they want Vargo as superintendent, and they asked members to rescind their vote.

After a that town hall meeting, Mallett said the majority of the board had spoken, and their decision would stand.

Reconsideration of the superintendent vote comes before members are slated to discuss and review applications submitted by candidates wanting to be the next superintendent, and decide which applicants they will call in to interview later in the week.

The deadline to apply for the superintendent’s job was Feb. 3, and the board is expected to hire the next superintendent at their regular meeting scheduled for Feb. 22.

Also on the agenda for Monday night’s meeting are discussions about the Ritchie Elementary School renovation project, middle school athletics and the Wheeling Park High School greenhouse.
