Mine War Museum to open in Matewan Saturday

MATEWAN, W.Va. — On the heels of a successful online fundraising campaign, the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum invites the public to a Grand Opening Celebration on Sat., May 16, in Matewan.

Museum doors open at 10 a.m. and entrance is free. A formal program runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Catch Matewan Massacre performances at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The museum is located at 336 Mate Street in Matewan, in a building that still bears the scars of bullet holes from the Matewan Massacre shootout. Its offerings include exhibits about coal camp life, the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek Strike of 1912-1913, the Matewan Massacre, the Miners’ March, and the Battle of Blair Mountain.

The Grand Opening will feature Blair Mountain reenactors, a live radio show, a special door prize, a photo booth, and speeches by historians, locals, and United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts.

The Wallace Horn Friendly Neighbor Show, the longest running radio show in West Virginia history, will record the formal program live for later broadcast….
