Kanawha officials talk of removing prosecutor

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Commission may consider removing Prosecutor Mark Plants from office.

During a commission meeting Tuesday night, Commission President Kent Carper and Commissioner Dave Hardy directed county staff to place the issue on the agenda for a commission meeting following a decision by the state Supreme Court. That decision should be issued by June 19.

Commissioner Hoppy Shores was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

“The point is everywhere I went this weekend, people wanted to talk about this issue,” Hardy said. “It is a distraction and it is a waste of taxpayer money.”

Hardy was referring to the first bill the county received from Special Prosecutor Don Morris, which totaled $23,650. Future bills are projected to cost about $30,000 monthly.

Hardy called for Plants to resign in light of the expense for the special prosecutor.

“This is a computer we didn’t buy, this is a police car we didn’t buy,” he said. “It is my opinion that the best resolution at this point would be for the prosecutor to remove himself from this situation.”
