Governors’ meeting good for W.Va., Justice says

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Fewer than half of the nation’s governors attended last weekends’ National Governors Association Summer Meeting at The Greenbrier resort, but those who did perhaps got a different picture of the Mountain State than the one with which they arrived, the resort’s owner said.

Jim Justice, Greenbrier owner and announced candidate for governor, was notably absent from the public meetings the NGA held about drug abuse, educating the workforce and how tourism enhances economic development. But Justice met with some of the governors during their private sessions — he didn’t mention which ones — that included entertainment, a session on “The History, Meaning and Future of Money” and a tour of The Greenbrier’s famous bunker.

“They got to see The Greenbrier, they got to see the mountains’ beauty beyond belief,” he said. Justice said he met with enough of the governors to know their perception of West Virginia was enhanced in a positive way during the four-day visit.

He said several governors commented on the area’s beauty and the kindness of the people they met.

“I was really proud to be part of it,” he said.

And, he said, West Virginia may have its problems, but he found through those discussions that other states have similar difficulties. He said he asked those governors what had worked best for them in bringing jobs and employment to their state, noting as he has since he announced his candidacy that “everything begins with a job.”

Although he didn’t “audit the classes,” he said the event was still an information-gathering tool for him, as well as a good showcase of the state…
