John Boehner, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — John Boehner, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will join Alex X. Mooney, Republican candidate for West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional district, for a get-out-the-vote rally from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at Paddy’s Irish Pub, 210 W. Liberty St., Charles Town.
“Speaker Boehner offered to come out and do an event,” Nick Clemens, Mooney’s campaign manager, said in a telephone interview Tuesday.
Attendance at the rally is by invitation.
Boehner, 64, was first elected to Congress in 1990. He represents Ohio’s 8th Congressional district. He is running for his 13th two-year term in the House.
He was elected speaker in 2010, after having served as both minority leader and majority leader.
Also appearing with Boehner and Mooney will be Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. The NRCC is a political committee devoted to increasing the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to its website.
Mooney faces Democrat candidate Nick Casey in the Nov. 4 general election.
Contacted by phone Tuesday, Casey campaign spokesman Mark Polen had no comment on Boehner’s appearance in Charles Town on Mooney’s behalf.
“We’re doing well in the Eastern Panhandle – we have a lot of Republicans for Casey in the Eastern Panhandle,” Polen said.
Several prominent Republicans in Berkeley and Jefferson counties have announced their support of Casey for Congress.
